On the long interminable flight back from India, I (Tuli) made several trips to the galley in search of snacks, water, tea etc. Masking for 18+ hours is not easy and I found myself needing quick, brief hydration breaks. Each time, I thanked the attendants before returning to my seat and buckling back into it.

At the end of the flight, an attendant approached me and thanked me, and I jokingly remarked that they must be exhausted going up and down the aisles thanking people. The attendant smiled wryly and said, “We don’t do this for everyone. Only those who see what we do and thank us. On this flight, there are five of you.”

I was astonished. Over 200 passengers and FIVE took the time to say thank you? What a small gesture to extend to others, particularly to those who are attempting to ease our passage. It also made me wonder, why not thank all 200+ passengers even if they haven’t thanked you? Does thanking someone have to be reciprocal?

Who eases your way, Beloved? How do you thank them?

In this season of opening to joy, searching for the perfect gift experience for your loved ones, reflecting with gratitude on all that we have, I give thanks for each and every one of you and the richness you bring to my life.

Namaste.
